Eleven Celebrities Whose Careers Were Changed By One Bad Choice

croozz

Being a famous celebrity in Hollywood cannot be easy. People are always watching your ever ymove, waiting for you to say or do something stupid so they can laugh as you fall from grace. We may think we all want to be rich and famous, but I think we forget some of the fine print that goes along with it. Fine print such as the idea that one wrong move can cost you everything. A big part of being celebrities is accepting the fact that you are being watched under a microscope. Every single thing you do, good and bad.

For celebrities, all it takes is one wrong move, and your career is over or forever changed. These wrong moves are often different. For some, it can be an affair or a crime committed that causes the respect or their public image to change. For others, it can be drug use, or even overblown ego that can cost them everything. The reality in that lifestyle is, you have to handle it delicately, or it can all come tumbling down on you, as is the case with the celebrities on this list.

Though it took much debate for us all to break it down, here are eleven celebrities whose careers were altered by one event, moment, or decision the public would never be able to get past.

Michael Richards Racist Rant – As Kramer on Seinfeld, Michael Richards was one the most beloved TV characters of all time.  That came to a screeching halt one night while doing a comedy show, when Richards famously lost his cool and tossed out a racial slur that his career would never get to live down.

David Hasselhoff’s Hamburger Episode – When part of your image is being a cool guy and being in control, it is probably not the best idea to let a video tape of you eating a hamburger off the floor leak onto the internet. Though David Hasselhoff has since cleaned up his act, he never really bounced back from that embarrassing video, which we ended up finding out was filmed by his own daughter. For shame, Hoff!

Mel Gibson Rage and Racism – A celebrity being hard to work with is pretty common in Hollywood, but when the celebrity also falls into fits of antisemitism and misogyny, it makes sense why no one would want to work with you.  That seems to be just the case with Mel Gibson ever since he got pulled over and let it loose about who he thinks “runs” Hollywood. This has only been compounded by further, equally insane outburst. Seriously, Gibson has become borderline scary.  Think about how big he was when Braveheart was out.  Those days are long gone.

DMX Crashing the Airport – Rappers are pretty well-known for doing some real over-the-top stuff, but when DMX drove his vehicle through a fence and into an airport claiming he was an FBI agent, no one was laughing.  Especially considering this happened in a post 9/11 world. We imagine if it was anyone else they would still be locked up. Though he has tried staging many comebacks, people just don’t seem to be willing to get past his wild escapades.

Mike Myers Makes The Love Guru – Usually, it takes more than a bad movie to ruin ones career, but in the case of comedian and former SNL funny man, Mike Myers, The Love Guru was all it took.  It wasn’t just that the movie was bad. It was that the movie seemed borderline racist to a lot of people, and racism is just not funny to most rational people. He may have acted a few times since, but really, he has basically fallen into obscurity. We think only a perfectly timed Austin Powers film could save him at this point.  Rumor is that might be what we’re getting.

Tony Caridi and Paul Ruebens (Pee-Wee Herman

Pee Wee Herman and the Movie Theater Incident – I won’t go into detail here for obvious reasons, but that stunt Pee Wee Herman pulled in the Florida movie theater pretty much ended up being the ultimate career suicide.  One minute, one of the big celebrities. The next minute, everyone was creeped out by him, and he never fully recovered from it.  Sure he’s had his moments since and does the occasional show, but he’s far from the spotlight right now.

Chris Brown Gets Too Violent – Domestic abuse is just not okay in any form, and the violent antics of R&B singer Chris Brown caused a huge and permanent dent on the celebrity’s otherwise rising star.  Rumor is, Chris Brown may have recently gotten himself in some more hot water. Pretty sure no one is shocked about that. Being held accountable for his actions may be just what this singer needs to stop his path of self-destruction.  It’s not as though Brown’s career is over but is it nearly what it once was?  Hardly.

Kevin Costner Makes Waterworld – Again, making a single bad film should not cost you a career, but when that movie was the most expensive movie ever made up to that point, and the movie tanked and cost the studio hundreds of millions of dollars, it might make sense why no one wants to work with you nearly as much anymore.  That is just what happened with Kevin Costner and his overly ambitious piece of self promotion, Waterworld. They say his star may be on the rise again, and that only took, what, twenty five years?

Rock History Magazine Legends

Jerry Lee Lewis Marries Underage Cousin – Again, to remind you, rock stars do insane things. In this case, though, it is a bit too insane.  Rocker Jerry Lee Lewis not only married his cousin, but he married his underage cousin.  That is wrong on so many levels, it makes total sense the world never forgave him or managed to look past it.

Jennifer Grey Gets Nose Job: No One Recognizes Her – Why would you want to get plastic surgery if the characteristic you are changing is one the world seems to know you most for?  Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey learned this the hard way when she got a nose job later on in life, and it altered her look so much, no one could recognize her anymore and didn’t want to hire her because she looked nothing like the Jennifer Grey they had in mind.

Tom Cruise on Oprah – People can say what they want, and you can try tell me this guy still has a valid career, but I know better. You can keep making movies, but if no one wants to see them anymore because they find you too strange, what does it matter if you make them? Tom Cruise is solid proof that if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, it makes no sound.

Though there are many times Tom went a little wonky, we have to say it was jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch and acting like a twelve year old was the last straw for many people regarding Cruise. Heck, if I saw a twelve year old react that way I would tell them to chill out and show some reserve, so what’s Tom’s excuse?
