Solheim Cup star Lexi Thompson baffled a reporter by dismissively answering a question which infuriated United States captain Stacy Lewis.

The 28-year-old provided a cold response in her press conference regarding her mishit chip in her four-ball match.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon on the 18th hole, with Thompson shanking her attempted chip onto the green.

Playing alongside Lilia Vu, the duo were tied with the European pair of Leona Maguire and Georgia Hall heading into the final hole.

Moments prior to Thompson's third shot, Maguire had chipped in for a birdie four, with Thompson require a chip for an eagle to claim the crucial point.

She almost hit partner Vu and her caddie, with the ball eventually resting up at the bottom of the hill by the front of the green.

Her missed chip proved decisive as it gave Team Europe their first full point of the day.

Speaking in the press conference following the match, Thompson was asked what went wrong for her chip and what her thought process was going into it.

But not in a mood to give an answer, she bluntly said: "I don't need to comment on that."

Taken aback, the reporter in question simply stated: "Excuse me?"

To which an agitated Thompson: "I don’t need to comment on the chip.

"It was a bad lie, and I did not hit a good chip, but it was pretty much impossible."

America's captain Lewis, who was sitting alongside Thompson, was left unimpressed by the fair question.

Muttering under her breath once Thompson had finished, she could be heard saying: "That's a terrible question."

Thompson's chip has proved costly for Team USA who were leading 4-0 at the start of Friday.

The two teams are now level at 8-8 with the winner to be decided later on Sunday.
