Making Your Glam Makeup Last 12 Hours

Here's an insider tidbit about award show days in Hollywood: The more famous you are more, the closer to actual show time you have your hair and makeup done. That means that working media types like me have our glam sessions booked very early in the day. When I learned that my Golden Globes hair and makeup was scheduled for 11 am on Sunday, I realized I needed help. The viewing dinner starts at 5 pm, the InStyle and Warner Brothers after-party starts at 9 pm and won't end until the early hours of Monday morning. How on earth can I keep my look fresh and unsmudged for 13+ hours? Luckily, my colleague, InStyle beauty director Angelique Serrano knows exactly what to do. Not only does she test and try every new product that hits beauty shelves, but she also manages to keep glowing (and smiling) even at the end of very long days. I asked her tell me what she was planning for her own Globes marathon day. Her advice may save me -- and any bridesmaids, gala attendees or other 12-hour glammers out there. -- A.M.

Angelique, tell us: How do you prep (beauty-wise) for a long night like the Golden Globes?

Stay hydratedAfter a long plane ride, the first thing I do when I get to my hotel (after checking out the snack situation and stepping into the free slippers) is put on a bio-cellulose sheet mask. (You can find them from brands like Giorgio Armani Beauty, SkinCeuticals, and Tatcha.) I rest it on my face for 15 minutes and the gel sheet pumps hydrating ingredients into my pores to plump and refresh my skin. Afterward, my makeup goes on much more smoothly.

Skip the primerIt may seem counterintuitive, but “some silicone-based primers can start to break up after about five hours,” says makeup artist Daniel Martin. The pro – who keeps celebrity clients, like Felicity Jones of The Theory of Everything, looking flawless for hours on end –swears by this secret: “I use a moisturizer and a foundation that are compatible, like a water-based moisturizer over a water-based foundation,” he says. “My go-to is Tatcha’s Deep Hydrating Firming Serum ($95; tatcha.com) with DiorSkin Nude Air Serum foundation ($53; dior.com) on top. The serum grabs onto the foundation so it doesn’t budge.”

Hit RefreshAfter a few hours with a full face of makeup, try to snag a 15-minute break. Then pour some cleansing water into a spray bottle and lightly mist it over your skin. “Dab your face with a tissue to pick up any broken bits of makeup and residue, and then reapply foundation as needed,” says Martin. “It’s a great way to grab everything that needs to come off without interrupting the makeup you spent hours putting on.”

Get MistyTravel with a small bottle of Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir ($48/3.4 oz., $18/1 oz.; sephora.com). You can mist the water-rich blend of botanicals over your makeup throughout the day to keep skin looking dewy, not cake-y.

Pack Some ErasersI keep Sephora Collection Targeted Eye Remover Swabs ($9; sephora.com) tucked in my purse; you bend one end of the stick to send makeup remover down into the cotton swab on the other end. Once moist, run it under lower lashes to send the raccoon eyes packing.

Touch Up Your LinerMartin suggests never leaving the house without lipstick for touch-ups, and your eyeliner. “At night, if the lights are low and you want to add a bit more drama, you just run the liner over your inner-eye rims (the water lines) and you’ve got instant definition.” We love Charlotte Tilbury’s Rock ‘N’ Kohl Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil in Bedroom Black ($27; charlottetilbury.com).
